In Another Story, Andrés Lozano presents new chapters of the story he has been writing for years and lies at the heart of his visual universe. Delving more explicitly into the codes of comics and storytelling, the exhibition brings together a series of drawings and paintings that highlight the complexity of the visual narrative. Suspended somewhere between fiction and reality, the Madrid-based artist crafts new panels from scenes rooted in everyday life, enriched by his distinctive visual language.

 

Natural landscapes and still lifes, interior spaces, architectural settings and roads reappear alongside the introspective, solitary figure that inhabits much of Lozano's work. These familiar motifs are joined by others that, while less recurrent, assume a more prominent role and introduce an almost unsettling aura of mystery, building a growing symbolism that gradually unfolds as the story progresses. The cat, the moon, the sun and the masks multiply from one work to the next, revealing themselves as allegorical elements within a narrative that remains deliberately open to interpretation.

 

Narrative has been a defining thread throughout Lozano's practice from the very beginning. In Another Story, however, it moves decisively to the forefront, becoming the central axis of the exhibition as a reflection of the artist's growing interest in writing and storytelling. This narrative evolution is accompanied by a visual evolution that continues to explore a number of longstanding concerns within Lozano's practice. Drawing, a constant starting point in his practice, regains a central role and finds a renewed way to engage with painting. In Another Story, a renewed balance emerges between the precise gesture of drawing, freer, more instinctive and less restrained, and the slower, more unruly progression of oil painting. This tension between drawing and painting, which obsesses the artist, finds here an unprecedented connection within his visual exploration.

 

With Another Story, Andrés Lozano extends both his pictorial and narrative journey, reaffirming that the very essence of painting lies in its ability to escape the absolute control of its creator. As Philip Guston wrote in 1956, one of the painters who has most profoundly shaped Lozano's artistic imagination, there is always a moment when "the paint falls into positions that feel destined."
