ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
One of the reasons we respect and are drawn to artistic creation lies in artists’ ability to look at things differently; we are drawn to their vision of the world. On a more theoretical level, we identify with their mimesis: their way of pausing to observe and digest the real. Soft Focus brings together artists whose interpretations of the ordinary compel us to see the extraordinary in the most everyday things: walking down a staircase, absentmindedly touching one’s rings, going out at night, or performing a magic trick in front of friends. Through their proposals, the exhibition opens up a space where the viewer’s gaze, much like the gestures depicted by the artists, becomes slow, almost tactile, drawing attention to the weight of the unspoken.
Rebecca Storm, Billy Gibney, Jesse Zuo, and Daniel Fleur work from a sense of proximity, which they approach more as a method than as a theme: a way of seeing the world that has more to do with whispering or suggesting than with explaining or stating. The body takes center stage. It stands as a shared archive that, when observed closely, reveals intimate narratives: a repository of tensions, habits, and fears. A screen onto the inner world, a tangle of involuntary gestures in which anxiety, discomfort, and desire surface.
Each artist approaches this from a different place, yet they converge on the central idea of Soft Focus: like a sonar that captures faint signals from the ocean floor, the body perceives that for which we still lack words.
Billy Gibney paints from involuntary memory, the kind triggered by a smell or the texture of something that no longer exists. The works he presents explore the capacity of everyday objects to act as vestiges of the forgotten, reactivating memories buried deep within the psyche.
Through paintings of an almost intimate scale, Jesse Zuo highlights those moments when the body acts on its own: the hand searching for a ring, fingers tangling in hair. Automatic, nearly invisible gestures that reveal an inner tension even before it is consciously perceived.
Daniel Fleur draws from contemporary visual culture —images sourced from social media, scenes of celebration and consumption— and renders them through a slow pictorial process built on successive layers of ochre and grey that evoke the tradition of the Old Masters. The result transforms the fleeting, fast image into dense, enduring matter.
Inspired by tenebrism and her background as a photographer, Rebecca Storm constructs surrealist compositions that function like intrusive thoughts: governed by their own internal logic, her images appeal to the subconscious before being processed rationally.
Soft Focus brings together four artists who transform the fleeting moment into slow matter, insisting on repetition and proximity as a means of connecting with memory.

ARTISTS

JESSE ZUO
Jesse Zuo is a Chinese, New York-based figurative painter. She earned her BFA and MFA
from the School of Visual Arts, forming the foundation for her deep commitment to being a
fine artist. Her art delves into the exploration of womanhood, the sensory experience of our
bodies, and the tumultuous journey of emotions.
Her work has been presented at LATITUDE Gallery (New York), as well as in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Kasmin Gallery (New York), Hashimoto Contemporary (New York), La Luz de Jesus Gallery (Los Angeles), Abigail Ogilvy Gallery (Boston), Moosey Art (Norwich), Long Story Short (Paris), and Piero Atchugarry Gallery (Turin).
BILLY GIBNEY
Billy Gibney (b. 1995) is a Melbourne-based artist with a distinctive flair for incandescent realism. His paintings focus on the potency and meaning within seemingly insignificant moments. Beginning with written prompts, Vanilli recalls everyday observations, dreams and memories. Through painting, he explores how these moments transform, distort or become embellished with each revisit. The resulting imagery is luscious, complex and shimmers with a familiar sentimentality.
Gibney has presented solo and duo exhibitions at Plan X (Milan), Michael Reid Gallery (Sydney), and Oigall Projects (Melbourne), and has participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Moosey (Norwich/London), Morris Adjmi (New York), and Marian Cramer Projects (Amsterdam).
He has completed residencies at Goodeye Projects and Moosey, with his work also featured in international art fairs such as CAN Art Fair and Context Art Miami.

REBECCA STORM
Rebecca Storm (1987, BC, Canada) was born and raised in Vancouver Island, BC, and now lives and works as a painter in Montreal, QC. Her work primarily focuses on the psyche and how visual information affects conscious and subconscious memory.
Drawing from personal experience, her paintings use semiotics to speculate on how cycles of trauma, addiction, spirituality, and power influence one's sense of identity and autonomy. Her work explores how we are often unconsciously at the mercy of these forces and how they affect the nature of our lived experience and our ability to connect with others.
DANIEL FLEUR
Daniel Fleur lives and works in Svalöv, Sweden.
Fleur’s paintings are developed from imagery sourced in contemporary visual culture.
Through a layered process that begins with an underpainting in ochre and grey —recalling
techniques associated with Old Master painting— he translates fleeting digital images into
materially complex compositions.
His work centres on gestures of exchange, display, and consumption, often focusing on
hands and partially visible figures interacting with objects such as jewellery, champagne, and
watches. The absence of fully identifiable figures produces a sense of anonymity, shifting
attention toward the construction of social identity through material cues.
Fleur holds a BFA and MFA from Malmö Art Academy (2013–2018). Recent solo exhibitions
include Keeping It Half Full at Tang Contemporary Art, Singapore (2025), Yet To Be
Perfected at KANT Gallery, Copenhagen (2024), and Glasses Half Full with Painters
Painting Paintings (2024). His work is held in collections including X Museum, Malmö Art
Museum, Public Art Agency Sweden, and the Region of Skåne.
